Golf In South Wales

South Wales is a rich mixture famous valleys with industrial pasts snake northwards from the coastal plain where the major cities of Cardiff and Swansea are to be found. Cardiff is a vibrant and handsome capital city, while Swansea, home to a once mighty steel industry, enjoys an enviable location at the head of the glorious Gower Peninsular.

Royal Porthcawl is generally acknowledged as the finest course in Wales, with no weak holes and fast, true greens. The views from the grassy fairways of nearby Southerndown are, however, even better. The links of Pennard have inspired eulogies from many a famous golf writer while Tenby, dating from 1888, is the oldest links in Wales. Celtic Manor on the other hand is one of the newer courses but already confirmed as a future Ryder Cup venue.

Ashburnham Golf Course

A classic links course, the Ashburnham golf course celebrated its centenary in 1994. Overlooking Carmarthen Bay the course's first two and final two holes are inland near the clubhouse.  Holes 3-8 run parallel to the sea and into the prevailing wind; holes 9-15 head back with the wind helping. With trouble generally to the right on most holes this is not an easy course for slicers.

Celtic Manor

This outstanding resort complex, set in 1400 acres of rolling parkland near Newport, has three excellent courses - Roman Road, Coldra Woods and Wentworth Hills - the latter being home to the Wales Open and designated host for the 2010 Ryder Cup.

Pennard

Pennard, west of Swansea, is an undulating seaside course with a fine pedigree and long history. It is also a favorite of golf writer James Finnegan, who praised its wild scenery and spectacular holes despite suffering ferocious winds when playing there.

Pyle & Kenfig

Pyle & Kenfig was designed by Harry Colt in 1922. A rolling mixture of seaside links and downland the course provides a very stiff test on a windy day (which is most days!).

Royal Porthcawl

The sea is visible from every hole here and, while the first three holes run alongside the beach, many of the others climb high above sea level to afford panoramic views of the Bristol Channel and across to Exmoor. The course, which dates from 1891, was designed by Charles Gibson and the greens are considered to be some of the best in Britain. The layout ensures the player faces every point of the compass during the round.

Southerdown

Southerndown, perched on a headland above the Ogmore River valley and Bristol Channel, looks down on Porthcawl and has even better views. It also requires shot-making of a high order to negotiate narrow, gorse-lined fairways in the inevitable wind which accompanies play. A more natural course would be hard to find and it remains a hidden gem, in that it does not enjoy the fame and reputation outside Wales that it deserves.

Tenby

Tenby is the oldest club in Wales (1888) and a grand seaside links in the traditional manner. Hosted the Welsh Amateur Championship in 2002. C K Cotton designed the current layout.
