Golf In South England

Concentrated in the south east, within easy reach of London and Gatwick Airport, are a cluster of fine courses with famous names, such as Sunningdale, Littlestone, Princes, Wentworth - which has hosted both the World match Play Championship and the Ryder Cup - and Royal St George's, a regular Open venue.

Burnham & Berrow Golf Club - South England

The south west offers Westward Ho, the oldest seaside course in England, while mid England boasts the Belfry, scene of the 1993 Ryder Cup.

Founded in 1890, this course on the north Somerset coast has hosted many championships.

Traditional links golf at its best, winding through and over large sandhills, with views out to the Bristol Channel and towards Wales. Its huge dunes guard tiny greens and makes piching and sand wedges the clubs of the day.

Rye Golf Club - South England
Does 'The Most Challenging Course In England' Title Motivate You?

The Rye Golf Club was founded in 1894. One of Harry Colt's most famous creations, Rye is unique. Located in East Sussex, the course is strikingly beautiful and can be very difficult.

Many critics agree that the Old Course is the most challenging course in the country.

The course was created by Harry S. Colt, but was later modified by Simpson and Campbell. Rye presents a traditional links course with winds that can either make or break your golfing day. This course demands complete patience, focus, and skill. The long blind shots and dog-legs require you to calculate the wind and throw in all the skill you can muster.

There are nine par 4 s that are over 400 yards long and five par 3's that require superb iron play. There are tricky and conventional holes that are reminiscent of St. Andrews. The 4th hole is a scary one. It runs along the top of a sand dune and any slight error to the right or left will result in the ball dropping into oblivion. The green is a bad dream; it tips sharply towards the golfers and is placed on top of the sand dune.

There are a few scary holes, but overall the greens are fast, unusually shaped, and visually stimulating. Golf at Rye is truly how golf should be. This links is like no other; it is a unique and thrilling experience to play on such a historic course.

The Rye Golf Club also offers a long 9-hole course named the Jubilee. This course measures 6,118 yards that is challenging, but less challenging than the Old Course.

In some ways reminiscent of North Berwick and St Andrews, it offers quirky holes as well as conventional ones, always with fast, true greens featuring some unusual shapes and contours.

A traditional links requiring a tremendous number of strategic shot selections. The start is tough, with only one par 3 (Tiddler) in the first 12 holes.
